Netflix’s 2018 thriller, Bird Box, features Sandra Bullock as the main character, creeping through a post-apocalyptic world, protecting two children along the way, but doing so with all three completely blind-folded.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I’ll try not to ruin too much of it, but basically in the movie, humans are being attacked by an unseen supernatural force. In order to survive, people must keep their eyes covered while outside at all times in order to avoid looking at the mysterious entity. Scary, right?!

What if I told you, though, that this shit is for real?! Instead of some mysterious being, though, we’re under attack every day and that baddie is the sun.

The Unseen Threat: UV Rays

The sun does a lot of coolness for humans everyday. It lights up our world, warms us up, and brings nourishment to all living creatures on the planet. Dang! Thank you, sun!

Unfortunately, though, the sun also emits a real party pooper called ultra violet rays, or UV rays. Along with all that light and colors we see everyday all around us, we’re also being exposed to these harmful UV rays. The worst part, though, is that we can’t even see them! We don’t even know they’re harming us.

Over time, harm from UV rays can lead to a ton of eye-related problems like cataracts, macular degeneration, and even photokeratitis which is when our eyes get sunburned! So what can we do? We gotta do like our pal, Sandra in Bird Box, and protect our eyes! Good news is: we don’t need to full on blind-fold ourselves, we just need a solid pair of sunglasses.

UV Protection Matters

Not all sunglasses are created equal, though, dawgs! You definitely want to look for sunglasses labeled with 100% UV protection or UV400. These labels mean they block both UVA and UVB rays. This helps assure that your sunglasses are providing the highest level of defense against harmful UV radiation.

Keep in mind, too, that UV rays aren’t only beating on us when it’s sunny outside. These mugs can penetrate through the clouds, too (I told you! They’re baaaaad!). UV damage can occur year-round, including winter, and even in cloudy weather.

Who’s Most Affected by UV Rays?

UV Rays are harmful to everyone! But some of us are at more risk than others. If you spend a ton of time outside, you gotta get some quality sunglasses, but for sure if you have lighter colored eyes like hazel, blue, or green.

Bird Box has one more lesson for us– don’t forget to protect the kiddos, y’all! Children’s eyes especially are vulnerable to UV damage. Always, always, always look for those labels when purchasing a new pair of sunglasses, 100% UV protection or UV400, and don’t forget to get a pair for the kiddies, too!

Sunglasses aren’t just a stylish accessory. Take a page out of Bird Box and protect your eyes! All sunglasses sold by Black Shades are equipped with HD2 lenses that not only keep colors sharp, they’re… wait for it… rated at UV400! Ayeeeeee.
